Madoka Kaname is an Ordinary Middle School Student with a loving family and a close circle of friends. One day, an enigmatic girl named Homura Akemi transfers into her class , setting off a chain of events that will completely change Madoka's life. In the shadows of the city of Mitakihara, a war is being waged between the grotesque witches and the magical girls who fight to limit their destructive influences. It is said that a mysterious witch, known only as Walpurgisnacht , will appear and destroy the world.
The story follows a group of female middle school students who choose to become magical girls and must battle surreal enemies called witches. They consequently learn of the anguish and perils associated with their new roles. A manga adaptation of the series and various spin-off manga series have been published by Houbunsha and licensed in North America by Yen Press. Madoka makes the decision to become a magical girl, wishing to prevent all witches from the past, present and future from coming into existence in the first place, a wish made possible by the massive Sayaka begins to fall into despair and begins fighting witches recklessly.
Madoka Magica began development after Akiyuki Shinbo expressed his desire to work on a new magical girl series after Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha to producer Atsuhiro Iwakami while they were working on Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari. All Blu-rays and DVDs released were delayed by one month sequentially from its original plans.
